PC Info

This page is where I intend to keep all those useful bits of information and "How to's" that I come across in my work and play.

1) Software

Windows XP

To import mail, folders and other info from Outlook Express 6 back into a new installation you first need to find the folder containing the old mails. In general you can find them in a directory such as:

C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities\{A2D77A46-528A-4B19-B32A-2EA56732396}\Microsoft\Outlook Express

Import the whole directory which contains a number of files, with a .dbx extension, using File->Import. If you can't find the directory easily then search in "Documents and settings" for files ending in *.dbx

Viruses and Adware

You can never been too safe when it comes to viruses, the 3 main rules are:

  • 1) Never open an e-mail attachement that you aren't 100% sure of
  • 2) Always keep your OS patched up to the latest release.
  • 3) Get a virus checker and keep it up to date. I use Norton AntiVirus. There is a free virus checker at the Symantec site click on "Check for Security risks" on the right hand side of the page.
  • Adware is Just as irritating and can slow down your web surfing to a crawl. There's a good free program that will scan your PC for adware and then allow you to delete it at Lavasoft called Ad-Aware. Click on "Ad Aware 6 from Download.com" in the middle of the page 2/3rds down.
